Boulder Wall Built to Hold the Grade and Look Great

When a yard has a grade problem, you need more than just a quick fix. Erosion, soil movement, and sloping ground can quietly do a lot of damage over time - and a solution that only looks good isn't enough. It has to actually work.

That's exactly what a boulder wall delivers. We're placing large natural boulders in a two-tiered layout tight against the side of this home, holding the grade back and giving the soil somewhere solid to push against. This isn't decorative stacking - each boulder is positioned deliberately, with weight and interlocking placement doing the structural work.

We run a Bobcat E50 mini excavator with a grapple attachment for this kind of work. That grapple is key - it lets us pick up and precisely rotate each boulder so we can fit them together the right way. A CAT skid steer handles the heavy lifting and material moving on the ground. Having the right equipment means we can handle boulders of this size without cutting corners on placement.

The geotextile fabric you can see backing the wall is doing real work too. It keeps the soil from migrating through the gaps while still allowing drainage - which is what makes a boulder wall last for decades instead of just a few seasons. Good-looking and built to hold. That's the standard we build to on every job like this.
